Grantham Sedge Steelhead Version
The FGN “Create A Hatch” Chironomid Pupa! Here’s a cool little chironomid pupa pattern shared with us by Gord and the boys from Flyguys Northern Division! And as good as it is up North, we have proven it successful through out the BC interior as well!
This particular fly is tied in black and red (one of our most favourite chironomid colour combination’s) and on a Mustad 9671 size #6 hook. The concept is the same no matter the colour choice or hook size so switch it up till you find the ingredients that match the particular hatch you’re looking for. http://flyguys.net

Thread: Black.
Tail: Golden Pheasant breast feather.
Body: Olive and Brown wool mixed.
Rib: Flat silver tinsel and oval silver tinsel.
Wing: Bronze Mallard quill slips.
Collar: Golden Pheasant breast.
Hackle: Heron substitute, (Blue-Eared Pheasant).
The Lady Caroline spey fly is a traditional Atlantic Salmon fly whose roots appear to be more or less veiled in mystery. Its name derives from Lady Caroline Gordon-Lennox, who was the daughter of the Duke of Richmond and Gordon at Gordon Castle, Banffshire County, Bellie Fochabers Parish, Scotland. Legendary among the community of Atlantic Salmon flyfishers, it has also developed a loyal following among the pursuants of Pacific Salmon and Steelhead. Try tying the body in different colours for variation.

May 2011 - Rolled Muddler
The rolled muddler minnow is a simple, yet effective fly used to imitate different types of baitfish. The size, color, and weight can easily be varied to accommodate the fish or the conditions. I usually fish natural and olive for trout; blue, olive, and natural for coho/chum salmon; and pink for pink salmon.

April 2011 - Fry Pattern
Alevin Patterns are especially effective at this time of year. With the emergence of the salmon fry from the gravel, large trout and steelhead as well as sea-run cutthroat are known for feeding heavily on these protein rich offerings. I really like this pattern because of the action in the water. Alot of patterns don’t offer enough movement in the water making them look stiff and unreaslistic. This alevin pattern with it’s marabou underwing is very effective. I like tying in red or orange marabou for a throat rather than the pictured saddle hackle as it looks and acts better in the water.

Feb 2011 - The Whore House
Hook: Mustad 34007 size 4- 3/0
Thread: 6/0 Black
Tail: Blue Buck tail or Polar Bear
Body: Black UV Polar Chenille
Eyes: small Aluminum sea eyes or bead chain eyes
Wing: Ostrich Herl, 4-8 strands of Lady Amherst over top
Flash: 4 Pieces of Pearl Krinkle Flash and 4 Strands of Purple Holographic Flash
Stinger Material: Stren Microfuse 30lb braid
Head: Peacock Herl
Note: When tying in the stinger material make sure to put the material through the eye of the hook and double it under the shank of the hook and tye it down to ensure that a large fish won’t be able to pull it off. It is important to use the lightest weight metal eyes you can find, lead eyes are too heavy and rob the fly of its movement in the water, which is what makes this a very effective fly.

Tying Instructions:
- Tie in buck tail at bend of hook for tail, tail should be long.
- Tie in silver/gold oval tinsel for ribbing.
- Tie in black mohair.
- Fold black cock neck around its stem so that one side has no hackle tips and tie it in at bend of hook.
- Wrap mohair 1/2 way up the hook shank and then secure with thread, but do not trim butt.
- Tie in golden pheasant tippet feather, out back extending from middle of body to just past the body.
- Continue wrapping mohair forward to just before eye, secure with thread and trim.
- Then wrap ribbing over mohair, pull pheasant tips up so you are sure not to wrap the ribbing over the feather. Secure with thread and eye of hook and trim.
- Next wrap the cock feather forward, make sure not to wrap over the pheasant tippet. Pull hackle fibers back as you wrap forward. Secure with thread at eye of hook and trim.
- Tie in two black spade hackles on top of body extending back to about half way down the tail.
- Form a small head with tying thread, whip finish, and head cement.
December 2010 - Marabou Shrimp
The shrimp pattern is a very effective pattern for winter steelhead. This pattern has proven itself to be a producer. It is a fantastic pattern for low water , the marabou catches every little current and eddy imparting an irresistable action to the fly. I think the real key to the fly is the tungsten bead eyes, which upon hitting the water make the fly swim right away. Add this to your fly box for those low water conditions and I know you won’t be disappointed. A new product called EYES-N-TUBES in the Y style make doing the eyes on this fly too easy. There is 4 different sizes and two colours to choose from (red or black).
Tying Materials:
Hook: Mustad 34007 size 4 or 6
Eyes: 40lb maxima topped with 1/8″ black Tungsten bead,( or just slide on a Y style eyes-n-tubes.) (use a lighter to melt one end to hold bead on)
Shellback: Strung Marabou(orange,hot pink, pink,white,Black)
Body: Marabou wound around shank
Legs: Palmered Strung or Popsicle Marabou.
(Strip off one side of marabou for better effect)
Rib: Copper or Gold Wire
