PETA Protests Mario Video Game by Gayne C. Young
Proving yet again that they are ahead of the curve in terms of a utopian
society, earlier this month the People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) targeted a 30-year-old video game character. In the new Nintendo 3DS game Super Mario 3D Land, the always youthful and ever happy plumber Mario uses a fur tanuki suit to fly. PETA finds this disgusting. According to the PETA website “When on a mission to rescue the princess, Mario has been known to use any means necessary to defeat his enemy—even wearing the skin of a raccoon dog to give him special powers. Tanooki may be just a "suit" in Mario games, but in real life, tanuki are raccoon dogs who are skinned alive for their fur. By wearing Tanooki, Mario is sending the message that it's OK to wear fur.”

By that rational I suppose Mario also sends the message that it’s OK to
irritate a monster gorilla (Donkey Kong), ride Yoshis (Super Mario Bros. 3),
collect Shine Sprites with a magic vacuum (Super Mario Sunshine), and a host of
other things that most people over the age of two would recognize as fantasy.
To further drive home the point that Mario is an evil, height-challenged,
raccoon dog skinning sun of a gun, the PETA website invites kids to “Play Super
Tanooki Skin 2D and help Tanooki reclaim his fur!”
I tried playing the game but found it too difficult as I’m an adult. I also
didn’t like that the game centers around what I assume is an aggravated,
skinless Tanooki cadaver chasing down a blood-dripping-from-his-fur flying
Mario. Call me crazy, but I found the premise kind of gross.
